On 31st May 2018, 8-year-old Dev Naran died in a collision on a stretch of smart motorway on the M6 near Birmingham. His mum Meera Naran MBE, has campaigned tirelessly ever since for Safer Drivers on Safer Roads in Dev’s memory. As part of this, she took a 19-point action plan to parliament and Transport Secretary Grant Shapps and 18 of those points, including changes to the Highway Code and improved driver education, were adopted. The 19th point, Dev’s Law, in memory of her son, wasn’t, because of the length of time it would take to go through parliament. Approaching the fourth anniversary of Dev’s death - Meera is pressing for the government to pass Dev’s Law, meaning all vehicles should be fitted with AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking). It’s what Meera believes could have saved Dev’s life, and she’s hoping that no other families have to go through what hers did, when they lost the light of their lives in Dev. Thatcham Research (The motor insurers’ automotive research centre) predicts that the adoption of AEB in all vehicles will save 1,100 lives and 122,860 casualties on our roads over the next decade alone.
